In a recent report studying how Australian electricity consumers have been paying too much for electricity, the ACCC made a dramatic suggestion to the Australian government, and that is; to end the Solar panel rebate as soon as possible, specifically 2021 rather than the current 2030 plan. They called for the federal small-scale renewable energy scheme (SRES) to be completely “abolished” by 2021.
The shocking part is, at the same time the report advised the federal government to get rid off the solar rebate, it also supported the coalitions pursuit to construct more coal and gas power plants across the country. The reason used to justify their stance was that households eligible for the solar rebate had an unfair advantage of those that weren’t, but on the flip-side it also means those that wish to install a solar PV system on their home post 2021, would have to miss out on the government rebate and fork out the difference from their own pocket.
The current national rebate scheme, or SRES, is already being continuously wound down year by year, since its introduction in 2015, until it is eventually phased out by 2030. The ACCC however, recommends the government to accelerate the process, and completely have the rebate abolished by 2021; 9 years earlier than planned.
Given that rooftop solar PV systems have now been installed on over 1 million Australian homes and helped hundreds of thousands of households to save massively on increasing electricity network charges, the report seems to shift the focus away from the real reasons why electricity prices are so high in Australia. These reasons are quite simple, electricity networks have been unfairly inflating prices, they’ve made their policies so complex and unclear for the layman to shop around for the best deal and that generators have a strong grasp on the energy market.
The short term outcome? Well we expect an increase in concerned consumers now enquiring to get their Solar systems installed in case the government takes the report on board and implements it. In the event that they do, the price of Solar panels has never been more competitive, due to increased demand for cheaper energy alternatives on the Australian residential and commercial market.
